DR. SAXENA'S SHOE LIST
(c)
(DO NOT DUPLICATE WITHOUT
DR. SAXENA's PERMISSION)
If you plan to run, jog or walk more than a mile at a time, you want to
have the correct shoe.
Running shoes are designed to be foot and activity specific (hence a
“running” shoe and not
another type of sport shoe). If you have flatter feet, you want a
straighter shaped shoe often
with more arch support. If you have a high-arched foot, you tend to be
better off with a more
curved shaped shoe with more shock absorption. People with arthritic
conditions of their back, knees and ankles will find more shock
absorption (cushioning) beneficial even if they have flatfeet. There is
a trend to have “minimal” shoe gear recently and even run barefoot.
While I am a big proponent of strengthening your feet barefoot, and
running on the beach or smooth grass barefoot, it is never prudent to
run on hard surfaces with thin soled shoes nor barefoot. To emulate
African runners who grew up running barefoot throughout their childhood
on dirt by running on modern paved surfaces with no protection is
incongruous and a question of “when” not “ if “ you will get injured.
It’s a question of how much risk you want to take. If you are having
injury problems and need arch supports or even custom orthoses, shoes
allow these to be recommended as well. It’s best to try shoes on at the
end of the day with the socks you’ll use. A specialty shoe store is
usually best at getting proper advice and fit. The shoe models often
change yearly but similar features can be found in updated models.
